Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Program and Project Supervisor in the Program and Project Integration Unit, the Research Data Specialist I (RDS I) will perform research and analysis projects involving various types of digital spatial data and techniques, and methodologies associated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The incumbent will focus on areas requiring knowledge and abilities of the journey level. The incumbent will maintain a knowledge level on constantly evolving GIS technological innovations, data collection methods and cartographic design standards. The incumbent will possess knowledge of geographic/cartographic sciences, be functional in GIS software, including the use of interactive mapping software/hardware for the Intranet and Internet and participate in presentations that require its application. Demonstrate knowledge of GIS methods and techniques; must maintain a broad understanding of division-wide data, programs and special projects and how they might benefit from the use of GIS. Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and coordinate with supervisor and other GIS staff on all assignments. Conducts business in a professional manner and is responsive to customer needs. Provide clear communication and strong customer support.

Working Conditions

This position provides hybrid telework opportunities. Beginning July 1, 2025, employees may be required to work in-person four days per week under the Energy Commission's telework policy currently under development as required by Executive Order N-22-25 and current CalHR guidance. CEC will review requests for exemptions on a case-by-case basis, with consideration to operational needs and the benefits of in-person interaction. Teleworking is only available for employees who reside in California. You must be located in California and provide your in-state address prior to your start date. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. Occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

The incumbent will need to have advanced level experience in Microsoft Suite, with particular focus on Microsoft Access, Excel, and/or other types of statistical software to be successful in this position. A working knowledge of ArcGIS, Python, Tableau, and Snowflake is preferred.
