About the Department

The Public Relations team is one of the four public-facing verticals that makes up New York Road Runners’ Public Affairs department—which also includes Government Affairs, Community Engagement and Impact. The Public Relations team proactively develops relationships with media outlets and influencers to drive impactful, qualitative and quantitative press coverage and exposure for NYRR as a New York City-based nonprofit, its mission-driven free youth programs and community initiatives, its 60+ adult and youth events (which includes annual signature events—TCS New York City Marathon, the United Airlines NYC Half and the RBC Brooklyn Half®), while also elevating the organization and its executives as industry leaders.

 

About the Position

Reporting to the Director of Public Relations—with indirect reporting into the Chief Communications and Community Officer and the Head of Public Relations—the Public Relations Coordinator supports the department’s strategic public relations efforts to tell the whole NYRR story and increase New York Road Runners’ brand awareness and execute event PR efforts at running events ranging from the TCS New York City Marathon to weekly races to youth and community programming. In this role, the Public Relations Coordinator will contribute to the team’s media relations strategy, managing, creating, and updating media lists, and monitoring media coverage and drafting coverage reports. The Coordinator will also provide essential support for races, events, and special initiatives, including helping draft media materials, conduct media outreach, and in-person / on-site operations. The perfect person for this role is an organized self-starter and collaborator with a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and ability to multitask—eager to learn and contribute to impactful public relations campaigns.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and track media coverage; clipping; and producing coverage updates and reports
  • Regularly maintain and update department’s media contact lists and media inbox
  • Support the development and distribution of media materials, including media advisories, fact sheets, event briefs, bios, timelines, and the TCS New York City Marathon Media Guide
  • Assist with in-person / on-site media operations, including media check-in, interview opportunities, and photo/video coordination
  • Support plan development and execution of public relations strategies for NYRR events, initiatives, partnerships, programs, etc.
  • Assist in identifying storytelling opportunities, reviewing runner story surveys, and crafting pitches to secure media coverage

 

Job Requirements:

Experience:

  • 1 year of experience in the Media and Public Relations industry preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit, community, sports or events-based organizations a plus

 

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in English, Public Relations, communications, journalism or related field preferred

 

Skills and Attributes:

  • Excellent creative and critical thinking skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
  • A collaborator with strong project management skills
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong ability to multitask, meet and perform under tight deadlines, think clearly under pressure, and exercise good judgment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

 

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work races in-person during weekends as required
  • Passion for New York Road Runners’ mission is a plus

 

Salary: $55k/year
